Since 1965, Raiss El Fenni Mohamed has lived and worked in the Kasbah of Tangier, Morocco, at the northern tip of Africa, looking across the Strait of Gibraltar toward Europe a few kilometers away. From this meeting point, where the Atlantic merges with the Mediterranean and two continents, with their distinct histories and heritages, almost touch, Raiss El Fenni has absorbed and reimagined diverse influences: Arab-Muslim, African, and Western. Born in Fez, the artistic and intellectual capital of Morocco, Raiss El Fenni began painting at a young age, despite having no formal training. Years spent dyeing fabrics honed his sensitivity to color and texture, nurturing a refined eye for surface and tone. His works fuse the luminous clarity of the Mediterranean with the earthy hues of Africa, evoking dreamlike landscapes swirling with fragments of lived experience. These layers unfold like veils, revealing a vibrant sensory universe of light, touch, and memory.
His paintings reside in collections across Morocco, Europe, Australia, Venezuela, Canada, and the United States. Beyond painting, Raiss El Fenni also designs clothing and textiles, extending his vision to the world of form. Mohamed Raiss El Fenni is the founder of Galerie Volubilis in Tangier, a testament to his deep commitment to the city's artistic community and its visual identity. For more than three decades, his work has explored themes such as illegal migration, the environment, and the vibrant pulse of Tangier's life.
Raiss el Fenni is renowned for his "highly colorful" painting style: surreal or abstract watercolors imbued with a spontaneous vision, organically weaving together natural motifs, geometric shapes, and snapshots of the Kasbah. A common thread running through his practice is the exploration of the "infinitely small." Working from his modest studio in the Petit Socco, Raiss el Fenni creates miniatures on reclaimed materials such as cardboard ice cream sticks and coffee stirrers. These tiny canvases depict vast landscapes, endless processions of travelers, and poignant scenes of migration, inviting viewers into his expansive, colorful, and emotionally powerful world.
